Operational Concepts of Large Telescopes *

چکیده

The singular way of scheduling at major observatories has favored certain types of astronomy. This has led to the discrimination of certain types of observations which could not be accommodated. It is the goal of future operations to open possibilities for some additional types of observational astronomy. Together with improved observatory operations the new observing modes can provide significant progress in the acquisition of astronomical data. Specifically, the capability to optimally match the schedule to observations should prove a major advantage of service observing. The VLT data flow project is designed to accommodate these new observing modes together with conventional observing. Simulations and first experience with the ESO NTT will prepare and refine the concepts and procedures foreseen for the VLT. The acceptance of service observing by the astronomical community is of critical importance for this new operational mode to succeed.

Operations in the era of large distributed telescopes

The previous generation of astronomical instruments tended to consist of single receivers in the focal point of one or more physical reflectors. Because of this, most astronomical data sets were small enough that the raw data could easily be downloaded and processed on a single machine. In the last decade, several large, complex Radio Astronomy instruments have been built and the SKA is current...

Measurement accuracy in control of segmented-mirror telescopes.

Design concepts for future large optical telescopes have highly segmented primary mirrors, with the out-of-plane degrees of freedom actively controlled. We estimate the contribution to errors in controlling the primary mirror that results from sensor noise and, in particular, compare mechanical measurements of relative segment motion with optical wave-front information. Data from the Keck teles...

Appendix 4.7.6.a Dynamic Range Limits on Large Segmented Mirror Telescopes

Segmented primary mirrors have become a mainstream concept for large telescopes of the future. Combining adaptive optics (AO) with segmented ground-based telescopes will enable higher resolution optical and near-infrared imaging than has hitherto been possible. The dynamic range limits of such telescopes then becomes an interesting topic. We develop simple analytic models which complement exist...

Optical Fabrication in the Large

Extremely large telescope concepts, with pupil diameter of 25-m and beyond, have been proposed in the past two decades but, so far, never materialized. First, ground-base telescopes were handicapped by atmospheric turbulence, which sets angular resolution and limits the benefit of size to collecting power. Second, the limited number of suitable optical substrates, the inherently slow and diffic...

Comparison of coronagraphs for high contrast imaging in the context of Extremely Large Telescopes

Aims. We compare coronagraph concepts and investigate their behavior and suitability for planet finder projects with Extremely Large Telescopes (ELTs, 30-42 meters class telescopes). Methods. For this task, we analyze the impact of major error sources that occur in a coronagraphic telescope (central obscuration, secondary support, low-order segment aberrations, segment reflectivity variations, ...
